Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Protagon.
Etymology: < German Protagon (O. Liebreich 1865, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 134 30) < ancient Greek πρωτο- proto- comb. form + ἄγον , neuter present participle of ἄγειν to lead (see agon n.).The alleged Greek etymon *πρωταγον cited by Liebreich does not appear to be attested.
Biochemistry. Now historical.
A fatty substance, occurring chiefly in the white matter of the brain, consisting of a mixture of cerebrosides and sphingomyelin (originally thought to be a single substance).

1951 H. J. Deuel Lipids I. v. 477 This so-called protagon is a snow-white mass which amounts to about 3–4% of the fresh brain.
1983 Notes & Rec. Royal Soc. 38 136 In 1907..she showed that ‘Protagon’, a substance that was meant to represent a basic component of brain cells, was only an unresolved mixture of other biochemicals.
