Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: proto- comb. form, Greek ἀνδρ- , ἀνήρ , -y suffix3.
Etymology: < proto- comb. form + ancient Greek ἀνδρ-, ἀνήρ man (see andro- comb. form) + -y suffix3, after German protandrisch (adjective) protandrous ( F. H. G. Hildebrand Die Geschlechter-Vertheilung bei den Pflanzen (1867) 17); compare Protandrist protandrous plant (1867 in the same source). Compare protogyny n. and protandrous adj.
