单词 prophetize
释义

prophetizev.

Brit. /ˈprɒfᵻtʌɪz/, U.S. /ˈprɑfəˌtaɪz/
Forms: Middle English prophetyse, Middle English– prophetise, 1500s– prophetize; also Scottish pre-1700 prophetiȝe, pre-1700 prophetysȝe.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French prophetizer, prophetiser; Latin prophetizare.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman prophetizer and Middle French prophetiser (French prophétiser ) to prophesy (c1155 in Old French, used intransitively), to prophesy or predict (a future event or situation) (c1160) and its etymon post-classical Latin prophetizare to prophesy, predict (Vetus Latina, Vulgate), perhaps < ancient Greek προϕητίζειν to prophesy (although this is only recorded in an isolated attestation in Hippocrates: see note below) < προϕήτης prophet n. + -ίζειν -ize suffix. Compare Old Occitan profetizar (c1100; also prophetisar ), Catalan profetitzar (late 13th cent. as †profetizar ), Spanish profetizar (c1200; also as †profetisar , †prophetisar ), Portuguese profetizar (13th cent. as †prophetizar ), Italian profetizzare (end of the 13th cent. or earlier as †profetizare ). Compare earlier prophesy v., and also prophet v.Post-classical Latin prophetizare occurs frequently (Vetus Latina, Vulgate) in the imperative singular, prophetiza , and it has been suggested that this represents a rendering of ancient Greek προϕήτευσον , imperative singular of προϕητεύειν to prophesy, to which verb it generally corresponds in the Greek New Testament. The other forms of the Latin verb would have developed on the model of post-classical Latin evangelizare evangelize v. With the Older Scots form prophetysȝe perhaps compare Middle French prophetisier (mid 12th cent. in Old French), variant of prophetiser.
