释义

prothetelyn.

Brit. /prəʊˈθɛtəli/, /prəʊˈθɛtl̩i/, /ˈprəʊθətɛli/, U.S. /proʊˈθɛdl̩i/, /ˈproʊθəˌtɛli/
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Prothetelie.
Etymology: < German Prothetelie (H. J. Kolbe 1903, in Allgemeine Zeitschr. f. Entomol. 8 28) < ancient Greek προθεῖν to run before ( < προ- pro- prefix2 + θεῖν to run < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit dhav- to run, flow) + τέλος end (see telos n.) + German -ie -y suffix3.
Entomology.
In certain insect larvae: the development of one part of the body, esp. the wings, at a faster rate than that of the rest, typically as a result of abnormally high temperature or abnormal hormonal influence.

prothetely1911
1911 Ann. Entomol. Soc. Amer. 4 313 The discs have developed with abnormal rapidity; thus producing larvae which possess characters that normally do not make their appearance until the pupal or adult condition is reached. This abnormal condition has been termed ‘prothetely’ by Kolbe (1903).
1940 R. Goldschmidt Material Basis Evol. iv. 283 The actual working of this timing mechanism can be inferred from cases of so-called prothetely, where a single larval organ, e.g. wings or antennae, metamorphoses alone.
1986 Jrnl. Insect Physiol. 32 813 Precocene III induced both precocious adult development (prothetely) and metathetely in all three species.
