Forms:

α. late Middle English prothonothayr, late Middle English prothonotur, late Middle English–1500s prothonotarye, late Middle English– prothonotary, 1500s–1600s prothonatary, 1500s–1600s prothonatory, 1500s–1600s prothonotory, 1600s prothonator, 1600s prothonotarie, 1700s prothonetary, 1700s–1800s prothonotari; also Scottish pre-1700 prothernoter, pre-1700 prothnotar, pre-1700 prothonotar, pre-1700 prothonoter, pre-1700 prothonothar, pre-1700 prothonotore.

β. late Middle English–1600s protonotarie, 1500s protonotari, 1500s protonotharie, 1500s– protonotary; also Scottish pre-1700 proterniter, pre-1700 protinnoter, pre-1700 protonatar, pre-1700 protonotar, pre-1700 protonotorie.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin protonotarius, prothonotarius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin protonotarius (also prothonotarius) high chancellor, chief secretary (8th cent.; frequently from 12th cent. in British sources) < Byzantine Greek πρωτονοτάριος (7th cent. in Sophronius) < ancient Greek πρωτο- proto- comb. form + Byzantine Greek νοτάριος (4th cent.) < classical Latin notārius notary n. Compare Middle French prothonotaire, protonotaire (c1370; French protonotaire), Catalan protonotari (1344), Spanish protonotario (13th cent.), Italian protonotario, protonotaro (beginning of the 15th cent.); also Middle Low German prōtonotārius, German Protonotarius, Protonotar (1438–9 as prothonotari). With Prothonotary Apostolic , Prothonotary Apostolical (see 2a) compare post-classical Latin Protonotarius Apostol. (1516 in the passage translated in quot. 1555), apparently an abbreviation for Protonotarius Apostolicus . With the α. forms compare the note at proto- comb. form; the present word is unusual in that the forms in -th- have come to predominate, probably as a result of their use in the titles of particular officers. The variant pronunciation with stress on the second syllable has a long history in English; absence of stress on the second element of the word is reflected from the 16th cent. in the forms prothonatary , prothonatory (compare the corresponding forms of prenotary n.). It may have originated in the post-classical Latin proˌtonoˈtārius and French proˌtonoˈtaire , with gradual change of the secondary stress into primary stress within English. The stress pattern ˌprothoˈnotary is probably after notary n.
