Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: hockey n.3; puck n.5, -y suffix6.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) a euphemistic or humorous alteration of hockey n.3, perhaps after puck n.5 (with punning allusion to hockey n.2, perhaps after the alleged practice of playing ice hockey with a puck made of frozen horse dung). Or perhaps (ii) independently < puck n.5 + -y suffix6, on account of the alleged practice of playing ice hockey with a puck made of frozen horse dung.
