Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pseudo- comb. form, diphtheria n.
Etymology: < pseudo- comb. form + diphtheria n. In sense 1 after German Pseudo-Diphtheriebacillus (G. v. Hofmann-Wellenhof 1888, in Wiener medizin. Wochenschr. 38 68; compare quot. 1893 at sense 1). Compare slightly earlier pseudodiphtheritic adj.
Medicine.
1. attributive. Designating the bacterium Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum, which resembles the causal agent of diphtheria, C. diphtheriae, and is found in the nasopharynx of humans, but is non-pathogenic. Chiefly in pseudodiphtheria bacillus. Cf. pseudodiphtheritic adj. 1. Now historical.
