Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: pseudo- comb. form, -gamy comb. form.
Etymology: < pseudo- comb. form + -gamy comb. form, originally (in sense 1a) after German Pseudogamie ( W. O. Focke Pflanzen-Mischlinge (1881) vii. 510). Compare post-classical Latin pseudogamia false or pretended marriage (a1540).

a. Botany. A form of apomixis in which the embryo develops from the female gamete following the stimulus of pollination but without fertilization (but usually requiring fertilization of the polar nuclei to generate the endosperm).
