Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: proto- comb. form, Greek γυνή.
Etymology: < proto- comb. form + ancient Greek γυνή woman (see -gynous comb. form), after German protogynisch, adjective (see protogynous adj.). Compare protogynous adj. and slightly later proterogyny n. Compare also protandry n.
