Etymology: < scientific Latin Protohippus (J. Leidy 1858, in Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia Mar. 26) < proto- proto- comb. form + ancient Greek ἵππος horse (see hippo- comb. form).The Greek word would have been *πρωθίππος, giving an English form *prothippus.

Palaeontology.

A genus of three-toed quadrupeds related to the ancestors of the modern horse, known from North American fossil remains of the late Miocene and early Pliocene epochs; (also protohippus) an animal of this genus.
