Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: pterido- comb. form, -sperm comb. form.
Etymology: < pterido- comb. form + -sperm comb. form, after scientific Latin Pteridospermae, former class name (F. Oliver & D. Scott 1904, in Proc. Royal Soc. 73 4). Compare French pteridospermées, plural noun (1909 or earlier), German Pteridospermen, plural noun (1913 or earlier).
Botany and Palaeontology.
Any of various extinct gymnosperms belonging to the division Pteridospermatophyta, which originated in the late Devonian period and became widespread towards the end of the Palaeozoic era, and resembled modern ferns in their leaves but unlike them produced seeds.
