Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pterna.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pterna (1679 in the passage translated in quot. 1684 at sense 1) < ancient Greek πτέρνη (in Hellenistic Greek also πτέρνα ) heel < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit pārṣṇi heel, classical Latin perna leg, thigh (compare pernio n.), Gothic fairzna heel, Old English fiersn heel. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (ptə̄·rna) /ˈptɜːrnə/.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
