Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pterygota.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pterygota ( C. Gegenbaur Grundriss der vergleichenden Anat. (ed. 2, 1878) §182. 244, the passage translated in quot. 1878) < ancient Greek πτερυγωτός winged < πτερυγ- , πτέρυξ wing (see pterygo- comb. form) + -ωτός (see -otic suffix).
Entomology.
With plural or singular agreement: a subclass comprising the majority of modern insects, consisting of those possessing wings (in at least some stage of life), or descended from winged forms. With plural agreement: members of this subclass collectively; winged insects. Cf. Apterygota n.The subclass is divided into two divisions, Exopterygota and Endopterygota, according to the type of metamorphosis.
