Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ptilinum.
Etymology: < scientific Latin ptilinum (1834 or earlier) < French ptiline ( J. B. Robineau-Desvoidy Essai sur les Myodaires (1830) i. 10), apparently arbitrarily < ancient Greek πτίλον soft feather, down, plume (see ptilo- comb. form).
Entomology.
A structure on the head of cyclorrhaphous dipteran flies which can be inflated (esp. to rupture the puparium) and later atrophies, leaving a suture.

1962 R. M. Gordon & M. M. J. Lavoipierre Entomol. for Students of Med. xxvii. 171 Having emerged from the puparium the insect pushes its way up through the soil to the surface by the alternate inflation and deflation of the ptilinum.
1994 P. J. Gullan & P. S. Cranston Insects vi. 158/2 Escape from the puparium is facilitated by eversion of a membranous sac on the head of the emerging adult, the ptilinum.
