Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: ptilo- comb. form, Greek παιδ- , παῖς , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ptilo- comb. form + ancient Greek παιδ-, παῖς child (see paedo- comb. form) + -ic suffix, after scientific Latin ptilopaedes ( C. J. Sundevall Methodi naturalis avium disponendarum tentamen (1872) p. xxi). Compare psilopaedic adj.
Ornithology. rare.
Of a bird: hatched with a complete covering of down. Contrasted with psilopaedic.
