Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ptilosis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ptilosis (1679 in the passage translated in quot. 1684) < Hellenistic Greek πτίλωσις disease of the eyelids, transferred use of πτίλωσις plumage (see ptilosis n.2; Hellenistic Greek πτίλος sore-eyed is derived < πτίλωσις disease of the eyelids). N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pt-, tilōu·sis) /(p)tɪˈləʊsɪs/. The form ptylosis is probably a hypercorrect spelling.
Medicine. Obsolete. rare.
Falling out of the eyelashes; inflammation of the eyelids accompanied by this. Cf. madarosis n.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ptilosis.
Etymology: < scientific Latin ptilosis ( J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 150) < Hellenistic Greek πτίλωσις plumage < πτιλοῦν to furnish with wings or feathers ( < ancient Greek πτίλον soft feather, down: see ptilo- comb. form) + -ωσις -osis suffix.
Ornithology. Now rare.
The appearance or characteristics of the feathers (esp. the down feathers) of a bird; the plumage; the study of this. Cf. pterylography n.

1972 A. M. Lucas & P. R. Stettenheim Avian Anat. I. iii. 157/1 Pterylosis covers the implantation point for each feather follicle in the skin of the bird; ptilosis deals with the size, shape and appearance of the feather that comes from each follicle as well as the total plumage coat.
