Etymology: In α. forms < ancient Greek ψευδόμαντις false prophet (see below) + -ist suffix; compare earlier mantist n., necromantist n. In β. forms directly < ancient Greek ψευδόμαντις < ψευδο- pseudo- comb. form + μάντις prophet, diviner (see mantic adj.).
