Etymology: Irregularly < proto- comb. form + ancient Greek ὕλη timber, material, (in philosophical language) matter (see hyle n.); compare πρώτη ὕλη first matter or substance (Aristotle Metaphysics).If a combination of the two words had been made in Greek, it would have been *πρωθύλη , in Latin form *prōthylē . Moreover, in English, ancient Greek ὕλη as second element usually becomes English -yl see -yl suffix); thus the regular form would be prothyl.
