Etymology: < classical Latin pūber-, pūber (adjective) that has attained puberty, (noun) adult (see note), related to pūbēs pubes n. Compare Middle French, French pubère (adjective) marriageable (1392 in legal use), having reached sexual maturity (1734), Italian pubere, adjective and noun (14th cent. as †pubero).The nominative form is not attested until post-classical Latin (from 5th cent. in grammarians); in classical Latin the nominative form used is pūbēs.
Obsolete.
In legal and official contexts: an adolescent, a youth. Usually in plural.
