Etymology: < scientific Latin puberulus (1803 or earlier as specific epithet in botanical use; < classical Latin pūber , taken in sense ‘downy’ (see puber n.) + -ulus -ule suffix) + -ous suffix; compare -ulous suffix. Compare puberulent adj., and earlier pubescent adj. 2.
