释义

pubio-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; apparently modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pubis n., -o- connective.
Etymology: < pubi- (in pubis n.) + -o- connective, apparently after French pubio- (formations in which are found from at least the late 18th cent.). Compare scientific Latin pubio- (1845 or earlier; apparently after French). Compare pubo- comb. form.Found from the second half of the 19th cent. in a small number of formations exemplified below, earliest (and chiefly) in adaptations of French anatomical terms. In addition to the compounds cited below, compare also pubio-ischiadic, pubio-sternal (apparently after French pubio-sternal (1797 or earlier)), pubio-umbilical (apparently after French pubio-ombilical (1789 or earlier)), pubio-urethral.
