Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pseudo- comb. form, -stome comb. form.
Etymology: < pseudo- comb. form + -stome comb. form. With senses 1 and 2 compare pseudostoma n.2 With sense 3 compare earlier Pseudostoma n.1 and its etymon scientific Latin Pseudostoma, and also French pseudostome (1827 or earlier).
Zoology.
1. Originally: the mouth or oral opening in an echinopluteus larva of a sea urchin. Now usually: the principal opening in the shell (test) of a testate amoeba, through which the pseudopodia extend.

2. An opening in a sponge which leads into a secondary cavity (pseudogaster) formed by folding of the body wall, or by fusion of neighbouring sponges in a colony, through which water is expelled if oscula open into it. Cf. pseudoproct n. 2. Obsolete. rare.

3. A pocket gopher of the genus Geomys (formerly Pseudostoma). Cf. Pseudostoma n.1 Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
