Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from Dutch. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from Middle Low German, Etymons: French provande, provende; Dutch provande; Middle Low German prōvande.
Etymology: Apparently < Anglo-Norman provande (rare; also 13th cent. in Old French), variant of provende provend n., probably partly via Middle Dutch provande (also provant ; Dutch provande ) or Middle Low German prōvande (also prōvant , prōfant ). Compare early modern German provande (late 15th cent., earliest in sources from Cologne; also profant , prowandt ; < Middle Dutch). Compare also post-classical Latin provandum fodder, variant of provenda provend n.With the form prouiande compare Middle Low German prōviande (see proviant n.).
Now English regional (northern) and Scottish.
