Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian provveditore, proveditore.
Etymology: < Italian provveditore, †proveditore provider, purveyor (a1342) < provvedere provide adj. + -itore , suffix forming agent nouns ( < classical Latin -itor : see -or suffix). Compare Italian regional (Piedmont) proveditor, (Milan) provveditor, and also (Venice) provedadore, provvedadore (now archaic). Compare also French provéditeur (1495 in Middle French).
1. Frequently with capital initial. (A title given to) any of various officials of the Venetian Republic, Florence, and elsewhere in northern Italy, esp. to a high-ranking civilian officer in charge of supplies, provisions, and artillery for the city or a dependency. Hence more generally: a governor, overseer, legate, inspector. Now historical.
