单词 pudu
释义

pudun.

Brit. /ˈpuːduː/, /puːˈduː/, U.S. /ˈpudu/
Forms: 1800s– puda, 1800s– pudu, 1900s– pudo (rare), 2000s– pudú. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Latin puda, pudu; Spanish pudú.
Etymology: Originally (in form puda ) < scientific Latin puda, specific name (in Capra puda: J. I. Molina Saggio sulla storia naturale del Chili (1782) iv. 308, the source translated in quot. 1808), probably < South American Spanish pudú (see below), with remodelling of the ending after Latin feminine adjectives belonging to the first declension. In later use (in form pudu ) either directly < South American Spanish pudú (1788 as pudu in the Spanish translation of Molina; < Mapuche pudu small deer), or < scientific Latin pudu, specific name (in Ovis pudu : J. F. Gmelin Linnaeus's Systema Naturae (ed. 13, 1788) I. I. 201; apparently as emendation of Molina's specific name puda ). Compare Italian pudu (1782 in J. I. Molina: see quot. 1808), French pudu (c1855 or earlier), scientific Latin Pudu, genus name (J. E. Gray 1852: see note at definition).
Either of two very small, rare South American deer of the genus Pudu, found in the lower Andes. Also pudu deer.Valid publication of the genus name: J. E. Gray 1852, in Proc. Zool. Soc. 1850 242.
