Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French puerice; Latin pueritia.
Etymology: < Middle French puerice boyhood, childhood (1405 in the passage translated in quot. 1481) and its etymon classical Latin pueritia < puer boy, child (see puerile adj. and n.) + -itia -ice suffix1. Compare Old Occitan puericia (1420), Catalan puerícia (c1400), Spanish puericia (second half of the 13th cent.), Italian puerizia (second half of the 13th cent.).Compare the following earlier occurrences of the Latin word in an English context:a1398 J. Trevisa tr. Bartholomaeus Anglicus De Proprietatibus Rerum (BL Add.) 67 Þe secounde age þat hatte puericia, an oþir childhode..is to þe ende of fouretene ȝere.c1450 J.
