Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori pukatea.
Etymology: < Maori pukatea.Variation between initial p and initial b arises from non-Maori perceptions of Maori /p/ (unaspirated) as [p] or [b]. Compare pukeko n. The same Maori word is probably intended in the following quotation (although the species is confused here with Griselinia lucida: see puka n.1 2):1853 J. D. Hooker Bot. Antarctic Voy.: Flora Novæ-Zelandiæ I. 98 Griselinia lucida..Nat. name, ‘Poukater’. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (pukăti·ă) /pʊkəˈtiːə/, but in O.E.D. (ed. 2, 1989) this is replaced by the pronunciation /pʊkaˈtea/.
