Origin: A borrowing from Maori. Etymon: Maori pūkeko.
Etymology: < Maori pūkeko.Variation between initial p and initial b arises from non-Maori perceptions of Maori /p/ (unaspirated) as [p] or [b]. According to Dict. New Zealand Eng. the α. forms are attested in mainly North Island spoken and general New Zealand written use, while the β forms are attested chiefly in the South Island, especially in older or more informal use.
