Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin psoas.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin psoas (1614 or earlier), reinterpretation as singular of plural of psoa psoa n. < ancient Greek ψόα (usually in plural ψόαι, accusative ψόας, the muscles of the loins). Compare French psoas (1616 or earlier).
Anatomy and Zoology.
1. More fully †psoas magnus, psoas major: a large muscle of the loin which arises from the lumbar vertebrae and is inserted with the iliacus muscle into the lesser trochanter of the femur, together acting to flex the hip (cf. iliopsoas n. at ilio- comb. form ). Also (more fully psoas minor, †psoas parvus): a smaller muscle, present in some humans and many other mammals, which arises from the last thoracic and first lumbar vertebrae and is inserted into the iliopectineal eminence. Also psoas muscle.
