Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Psocus , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Psocus, genus name ( J. C. Fabricius Supplementum entomologiæ systematicæ (1798) 198; < Hellenistic Greek ψώχειν to rub so as to break up, separate < an alternative form (with different vocalism) of the stem of ancient Greek ψῆν to rub, wipe (see psettaceous adj.) + -χειν, suffix forming verbs) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Psocidae, family name ( J. F. Stephens Illustr. Brit. Entomol. (1835) VI. 97).
Entomology.
Any of numerous small, sometimes wingless, insects constituting the order Psocoptera, which feed on fragments of animal and vegetable matter in bark, straw, and soil, among books and papers, etc., and are sometimes pests of stored products; a booklouse.Originally treated as a single family ( Psocidae) of the former order Pseudoneuroptera, the psocids are now divided among numerous families.
