Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Partly also a borrowing from German. Etymons: Greek ψυχαγωγός; German Psychagog.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ψυχαγωγός (adjective) conjuring up the dead, (noun) necromancer, in Byzantine Greek also leader of departed souls, said of Hermes < ψυχή psyche n. + ἀγωγός leading (see agogic adj.1). In sense 2 via German Psychagog (1845 in the passage translated in quot. 1847 at sense 2, now Psychagoge ; perhaps originally after Pädagoge teacher: see pedagogue n.). Compare French psychagogue necromancer (1587 in Middle French). With sense 3 compare post-classical Latin psychagogica (plural noun) stimulating or reviving medicines (1722 or earlier).
