Etymology: < post-classical Latin provincialatus (1399; 1518 in a British source) < classical Latin prōvinciālis provincial adj. + -ātus -ate suffix1. Compare French provincialat (dated 1694 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)), Spanish provincialato (c1604), Portuguese provincialado (1562), Italian provincialato (a1610). Compare earlier provincialship n., provinciality n.
