Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pro- prefix2, virus n.
Etymology: < pro- prefix2 + virus n.The word was coined by C. D. Darlington, a British scientist (compare quot. 1950), but first published in a French context (C. D. Darlington 1948, in Colloques internat. du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique: Unités biologiques douées de continuité génétique, Paris, Juin-Juillet 1948 8).

The genetic material of a DNA or RNA virus as incorporated into, and able to replicate with, the genome of a host cell.
