Etymology: < bed n. + bug n.2
A bloodsucking heteropteran bug of flattened shape, Cimex lectularius (family Cimicidae), which comes out to feed on humans at night. Sometimes also: any of the bugs of this family, which are parasites of mammals and birds.Originally known simply as ‘bug’ (bug n.2 2a), and frequently still so called in the United States and parts of Britain.
