Etymology: < classical Latin pūblicāt-, past participial stem of pūblicāre publish v. + -ory suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin publicatorius (in littere publicatorie letters declaratory, 1416 in a British source). Compare also post-classical Latin publicator person who divulges (5th cent.), proclaimer, preacher (1449 in a British source). N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pɒ·blikeitəri, -ĕtəri) /ˈpʌblɪkeɪtərɪ/, /-ətərɪ/).
