Etymology: < post-classical Latin prozymita (11th cent.) < Byzantine Greek προζυμίτης < προζύμιον leaven ( < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix² + ζύμη leaven (see zyme n.) + -ιον , suffix forming nouns; compare -y suffix⁴) + ancient Greek -ίτης -ite suffix¹; originally via German Prozymit (1836 in the passage translated in quot. 1850). Compare Azymite n.

Christian Church. historical (now rare).

A member of a Church in which leavened bread is consecrated in the Eucharist. Also occasionally as adj. Cf. Azymite n.At the time of the Great Schism of 1054, the Latin term was used disparagingly by adherents of the Western or Catholic Church to designate members of the Eastern or Orthodox Church.
