Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; apparently partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: psycho- comb. form, diagnostics n. at diagnostic n..
Etymology: < psycho- comb. form + diagnostics n. at diagnostic n., apparently originally after French psycho-diagnostic (E. Claparède 1902; now usually psychodiagnostique); in the specific sense after German Psychodiagnostik (1898 or earlier in general sense, 1921 in specific use with reference to Rorschach tests: see note).The term was largely popularized by the work of Hermann Rorschach (see Rorschach n.), who used it in his book Psychodiagnostik (1921) in connection with the ink blot tests which were named after him.
Psychology.
With singular agreement. The branch of psychology concerned with psychological assessment (esp. as carried out by means of Rorschach and other projective tests, personality profiles, etc.). Also: diagnosis of psychiatric or abnormal psychological conditions.
