Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pruīnōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin pruīnōsus frosty < pruīna hoar frost ( < the same Indo-European base as freeze v.) + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare pruinose adj. and pruinate adj.With sense 2 compare French pruineux (1842; < pruine hoar frost (first half of the 12th cent. in Anglo-Norman in an isolated attestation; subsequently from 1516), whitish waxy secretion or powdery deposit giving the appearance of hoar frost (1842) < classical Latin pruīna : see above) + -eux : see -ous suffix).
