单词 prunello
释义

prunellon.

Brit. /prʊˈnɛləʊ/, /pruːˈnɛləʊ/, U.S. /pruˈnɛloʊ/
Forms:

α. late Middle English 1700s 1900s– prunelle.

β. 1600s pruneola, 1600s–1700s prunella, 1600s– prunello, 1700s–1800s prunelloe.

Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French prunele; Latin prunella; Italian prunella.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman prunele, Middle French prunele, prunelle (French prunelle ) sloe (c1165 in Old French) and its probable etymon post-classical Latin prunella small plum or sloe (6th cent.), sloe (c1120 in a British source as prunella silvatica ) < pruna prune n. + -ella -ella suffix. In later use probably partly also < Italian †prunella (1611 in Florio, glossed ‘any kind of little plumbe or Prune’). Compare post-classical Latin spina prunellifera blackthorn, sloe bush (c1120 in a British source), prunellum sloe, prunella burnet (bearing plum-like rosehips), pruneolum bullace (all three 1579 in a British source). Compare also Old Occitan prunela (Occitan prunèl, prunèla), Catalan prunell (15th cent.).With forms in -ello , -elloe compare -ello suffix.
Now rare.
Originally: a small kind of plum, either fresh or dried. Later: spec. the sloe, the bitter fruit of the blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa), which may be dried or used to make a liqueur (cf. prunelle n.).
