Etymology: < French prurit (c1271 in Old French) or its etymon classical Latin prūrītus pruritus n. Compare Spanish prurito (15th cent. or earlier), Portuguese prurido (1720; also (rare) prurito ), Italian prurito (a1250 as prudito ). Compare earlier pruritus n., prurity n. 1.
