Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prūrītus.
Etymology: < classical Latin prūrītus itch, itching < prūrīre to itch (see prurient adj. and n.) + -tus , suffix forming verbal nouns. Compare slightly later prurity n.In form pruritis after words in -itis suffix.
Itching of the skin or other surface. Also figurative: a strong desire or craving.Also with distinguishing scientific Latin word, most commonly specifying the site of itching, as: pruritus ani n. pruritus of the anus; pruritus vulvae n. pruritus of the vulva; etc.
