单词 pryddest
释义

pryddestn.

Brit. /ˈprʌðɛst/, U.S. /ˈprəðɛst/, Welsh English /ˈprəðɛst/
Inflections: Plural pryddestau Brit. /prəˈðɛstʌɪ/, U.S. /prəˈðɛˌstaɪ/, Welsh English /prəˈðɛsːtai/.
Origin: A borrowing from Welsh. Etymon: Welsh pryddest.
Etymology: < Welsh pryddest (12th cent., originally as †prydest ) < prydu to compose poetry (12th cent.; < pryd appearance, countenance, image, likeness, beauty, cognate with Early Irish cruth form, appearance, beauty (Irish cruth ), creth poetry < a suffixed form of the Indo-European base of Sanskrit kṛ- to do, make, perform, accomplish: see karma n.) + -est, of unknown origin (also found, apparently independently, in gloddest feast, carousal, bloddest rejoicing, applause). The -dd- (/ð/) in the current Welsh form (in use since the 17th cent.) may result from a misunderstanding of the -d- in medieval orthography, where it could represent both /d/ and /ð/, or it may have developed by analogy with gloddest, bloddest (see above). The plural form pryddestau is after the Welsh plural.
In Welsh poetry: a long poem in free metre.
