Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French prayel.
Etymology: < Middle French prayel, preel open space surrounded by buildings, courtyard (second half of the 12th cent in Old French as prael in sense ‘small meadow’; French préau ) < pré meadow (see pree n.1) + -el -el suffix2; compare -elle suffix. Compare Middle Dutch prayeel, prieel lawn by a house, garden (Dutch prieel). Compare also post-classical Latin praella (1286 in a British source), pratellum (c700), both in sense ‘small meadow’.
Obsolete. rare.
