Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Psallmelodicon.
Etymology: < German †Psallmelodicon (1830 or earlier, now Psallmelodikon ) < ancient Greek ψάλλειν to twang, play (see psalm n.) + Hellenistic Greek μελῳδικόν (see melodicon n.). Compare German Melodica melodica n.The instrument was invented by J. Weinrich (1793–1855), German shoe-maker, and patented in 1828. In form psalm melodicon apparently re-interpreted after psalm n. Compare German Psalm Melodicon, showing the same development.

1876 J. Stainer & W. A. Barrett Dict. Musical Terms 371/1 Psalm Melodicon, an instrument invented in 1828 by Schuhmacher Weinrich. It was a wind instrument with keys and ventages, imitating the tone of several orchestral instruments.
1964 S. Marcuse Musical Instruments (1975) 422/2 Psallmelodikon, an improved Neu Tschang invented in 1828 by Weinrich of Heiligenstadt near Erfurt, in form of a flattened cylinder with free reeds, 26 keys, 6 front and 2 rear fingerholes.
