Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin psalmodizare ; psalmody n., -ize suffix.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin psalmodizare to sing psalms (frequently c1266–1509 in British sources) < psalmodia psalmody n. + -izare -ize suffix. In later use directly < psalmody n. + -ize suffix. Compare earlier psalmody v., psalm v., and psalmonizing n.
1. intransitive. To sing psalms. Also in extended use.
