(frequently from 11th cent.) in British sources) < ancient Greek ψαλμῳδία action of singing to the harp, in Hellenistic Greek also psalm-singing, composing of psalms < Hellenistic Greek ψαλμῳδός psalmist ( < ancient Greek ψαλμός psalm n. + ᾠδή song: see ode n.) + ancient Greek -ία -y suffix3.
