Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: psycho- comb. form, -pathy comb. form.
Etymology: < psycho- comb. form + -pathy comb. form. In sense 1 after German Psychopathie ( E. von Feuchtersleben Lehrbuch der ärztlichen Seelenkunde (1845) 374, the passage translated in quot. 1847). Compare scientific Latin psychopathia (1844 or earlier in a German source), French psychopathie (1877), Italian psicopatia (1829), all in same sense. In sense 2 (which is apparently not paralleled in any of the foreign languages cited above) after homoeopathy n., hydropathy n., etc.
1. Psychology and Psychiatry. Originally: mental illness; an instance of this. In later use: spec. a personality disorder characterized by persistent impulsive, irresponsible, antisocial, and often violent or aggressive behaviour, often accompanied by an inability to form normal relationships with others.
