Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: psalter n., -ess suffix1.
Etymology: < psalter n. (see branch II. at that entry) + -ess suffix1: see -tress suffix. Compare post-classical Latin psaltatrix (6th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation), psaltrix (1538 or earlier). Compare psalterer n.In quot. 1655 perhaps reflecting confusion in post-classical Latin of psaltatrix with saltatrix female dancer, which would have been homophonous.
Chiefly poetic.
A female psaltery player.
