Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French psammite.
Etymology: < French psammite ( A. Brongniart Traité élém. de minéral. (1807) I. 288) < ancient Greek ψάμμος sand (see psammo- comb. form) + French -ite -ite suffix1. Compare Hellenistic Greek ψαμμίτης from sand. N.E.D. (1909) also gives the pronunciation (psæ·məit) /ˈpsæmaɪt/.
Geology.
Originally: †a fine or smooth-grained sandstone (obsolete). In later use: a sedimentary rock composed of medium-sized particles (commonly defined as those with a diameter between 1/ 16 mm and either 2 or 4 mm); (also) a metamorphic derivative of a sandstone.
