A genus comprising the Old World sand snakes, which are slender, fast-moving, back-fanged colubrid snakes of arid grassland, scrubland, and semidesert in Africa and Asia; (also) a snake of this genus. ΚΠ 1852 T. Ross tr. J. J. von Tschudi Trav. Peru ix. 177 Serpents upon the whole are rather seldom seen. They belong to different kinds, some poisonous, some innoxious (for example, Zacholus, Psammophis, Oxyrrhopus, [etc.]). 1886 Encycl. Brit. XX. 468/2 The small family of Psammophidæ is well represented by three genera and nine species, of which six belong to Psammophis. 1957 R. L.
