Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Psammophis.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Psammophis (attributed to H. Boie by F. Boie 1826, in Isis von Oken 19 982) < Hellenistic Greek ψαμμο- psammo- comb. form + ancient Greek ὄϕις snake, serpent (see ophio- comb. form).

Zoology.

A genus comprising the Old World sand snakes, which are slender, fast-moving, back-fanged colubrid snakes of arid grassland, scrubland, and semidesert in Africa and Asia; (also) a snake of this genus.
